Carol was my mom. In Jr. High, she came to Illinois to live with my “grandma”—her great‑aunt—after surviving a childhood marked by instability and even periods of homelessness in California. She arrived with nothing but the clothes on her back.
She often told the story of my grandma ordering her brand‑new clothes and shoes. For the first time in her life, she had belongings that were hers. That simple act of dignity changed something in her. It wasn’t just about fabric or footwear—it was about being seen, valued, and cared for.
Carol’s Closet was born from that legacy.
We want every woman, man, and child who walks through our doors to experience that same sense of dignity. Whether it’s clothing, baby items, or basic necessities, we want families to know they are not alone and that their story matters. Just like my mom, they deserve to feel the warmth of someone saying, “Here—this is for you.”
Carol’s Closet is more than a room of donated items. It’s a place of belonging, hope, and fresh starts. It’s a way to honor my mom’s story by helping others write a new chapter in theirs.
